Following Pick wins last year for several technical printers and the year before that for a number of graphic arts models, Canon continues to impress with its top-notch imagePROGRAF line of wide format devices.
This past year, five devices from Canon—four printers and one MFP—were selected by BLI analysts and technicians as 2016 Picks in their respective categories for their stellar performance.
In addition to proving highly reliable in BLI’s demanding lab test, each of the winners demonstrated excellent media handling and print productivity and very good ease of use.
“Whether printing a single page, multi-page documents or a batch of technical files of different formats to replicate a real-world multi-user environment, the imagePROGRAF models all outperformed their competitors, in some cases by a large margin,” said David Sweetnam, BLI’s director of research and lab services EMEA/Asia. “Image quality was excellent for AEC graphics and while we saw no banding during testing, users do have a fallback option to avoid it with Canon’s unidirectional printing feature, which is a notable advantage over some of its rivals.”
Additional strengths contributing to their selection as Pick winners include a robust feature set; Canon’s unique hot-swap ink tank system that helps to reduce downtime by enabling on-the-fly ink tank replacement; and a highly graphical GARO print driver, which offers a more flexible Free Layout nesting function than offered by rival units, with users having precise control over the positioning of images to save media.
Features that are specific to individual models include the front-loading dual-roll design on the iPF840 and iPF850 models, allowing users to switch easily between different media types or sizes without the need to reload rolls each time. The iPF850 model, which is the model that was tested in the iPF830/840/850 Series, also comes with a 100-page stacker assembly with twice the capacity of competing models, keeping output neat. The other two models are based on the same engine as the iPF850 and differ only in that the iPF830 has a single roll and the iPF840 has no stacker but offers a high-capacity output basket—so they would deliver the same performance and therefore share the award.
The iPF840 MFP configuration includes the M40 scanner for additional copy and scan functionality, while a user-friendly 22ʺ touchscreen display with Canon’s SmartWorks MFP interface provides a simplified, time-saving Scan/Adjust/Print workflow that’s more streamlined than that of rival MFP models.
