Nine Devices Earn BLI Outstanding Achievement Awards for Energy Efficiency

January 9, 2012 – Hackensack (NJ) – Buyers Laboratory LLC, the world’s leading independent tester of document imaging products, today awarded “Outstanding Achievement” accolades to the most energy-efficient models tested in the past six months, with honors going to models from Brother, Canon, HP and Ricoh. The winners exhibited significantly lower than average energy consumption for their respective groups and offer a variety of environmentally friendly features to help users reduce their overall environmental impact.
After analyzing the results for the top performers in a range of printer and MFP categories, BLI awarded Winter 2012 “Outstanding Achievement” awards to the following products:

RICOH AMERICAS CORPORATION
Ricoh Aficio MP C2051

Ricoh
Ricoh’s quest for the holy grail of energy efficiency is recognized by no fewer than four BLI “Outstanding Achievement” awards, for models ranging in speed from 20 ppm to 45 ppm. With an energy cost 62% lower than average, the Ricoh Aficio MP C300SR has the lowest projected annual energy consumption rate for mid-size workgroup models in the A4 color MFP category. Next in line for BLI’s laurels is the copier-based 20-ppm Ricoh Aficio MP C2051 MFP, with energy costs 44% lower than average. Its sister units, the 35-ppm Ricoh Aficio MP C3501 and 45-ppm Ricoh Aficio MP C4501 Series, both exhibited energy consumption rates 52% below average.
Each award-winning Ricoh model exhibited faster than average recovery times from daytime and overnight sleep, and toner yields for all colors greatly exceeded their rated yields. Ricoh enables users to remain highly productive while being environmentally responsible, with duplex speeds that, unlike with competitive units, keep up with simplex speeds. Remarkably, the MP C4501 speeds up when duplex printing and the MP C2051 speeds up when duplex printing and copying. And all four models come with a range of environmentally friendly features, including an auto-color mode, N-up mode and job review and proof modes—all of which help to reduce paper and toner consumption.
Canon
The Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE C2020 and imageCLASS D550 continue Canon’s excellent track record for energy efficiency, offering the lowest projected annual energy consumption rates in their respective groups—with projected energy costs 49% and 70% lower than average, respectively. A major factor in their class-leading performances is the units’ ultra-low sleep mode energy consumption. Further, while both devices include such environmentally friendly features as toner-save mode and job review and proof modes for print jobs to reduce paper and toner consumption, the imageCLASS D550 also offers significantly faster than average recovery times from sleep mode, which helps encourage users to leverage those lower energy-consuming sleep mode settings.
Hewlett-Packard
The first inkjet devices to offer both duplex functionality, which helps to reduce paper use, and significantly lower than average energy consumption, the HP Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter and Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One earned BLI’s recognition for outstanding energy efficiency.
As a single-function inkjet printer, the Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter offers a projected annual energy cost that’s about 48% less than the competitive average, as well as the ability to output all text using black ink even when color elements are present on the same page, helping to reduce color ink use. Plus, this unit can enter sleep mode evening during an error condition, so the printer isn’t using more energy than necessary while waiting for spent ink cartridges to be swapped out, for example. The Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One is no less impressive, with all of the environmentally friendly features of the Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter, plus above average tested ink yields for all four colors, the ability to scan without fully warming up the device’s other components, and a projected energy cost that’s an astonishing 88% lower than the average. In fact, this all-in-one inkjet uses the lowest energy of any printer-based device tested to date. The Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One shares this award with the similarly equipped Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One.
Brother
The Brother HL-4570CDW Series has been recognized with BLI’s “Outstanding Achievement” award for “Energy Efficiency” in the A4 color laser printer category for small workgroups, as it has one of the lowest projected annual energy consumption rates in its class when running BLI’s energy consumption job stream test, with energy costs less than half those of the average. It also features a fast recovery time from overnight sleep and above average toner yields for cyan and yellow. The HL-4570CDW Series includes an auto-color mode when printing and a variety of environmentally friendly features in the print driver, including N-up mode, toner-save mode, blank-page removal and job review modes to reduce paper and toner consumption.
