BLI Honors Samsung with Summer 2013 “Outstanding Achievement” Award
August 5, 2013 – Hackensack, NJ – Buyers Laboratory LLC (BLI), the world’s leading independent evaluator of document imaging hardware and software, has recognized Samsung Electronics America with an award for “Outstanding Achievement in Innovation”  for its use of NFC (near-field communication) technology to greatly simplify  mobile printing and scanning.

“The process of output device discovery from mobile print apps can be cumbersome and difficult, requiring the mobile device to be on the same wireless network as a desired printer or MFP, and in some cases requiring manual entry of an output device’s IP address,” said BLI Associate Editor Dan DiGiacomo. “But with Samsung’s use of NFC technology in its Xpress C410W printer and C460FW color laser MFP, currently in the lab for testing, mobile printing couldn’t be easier. A user just taps  a compatible NFC-enabled smart phone on the printer to automatically install Samsung’s free Mobile Print App, if it’s not already installed on the phone, and then connects to the device automatically.”

NFC, a short-range wireless connectivity technology that uses magnetic-field induction, relies on close proximity in order for electronic devices to communicate with one another. In this case, Samsung has enabled the mobile device and printer to initiate communication using NFC after an initial tap, and then establishes a one-to-one WiFi connection for transmission of documents for printing, scanning or faxing.  Users can then print or scan documents with an additional tap of the smart phone on the Samsung printer, without needing to issue the command from the mobile print app.

“While NFC technology has existed for some time, its implementation in an output device and its seamless integration with Samsung Mobile Print is particularly noteworthy,” said DiGiacomo. “Samsung has found a useful business application for NFC that makes mobile workers more productive by mitigating the difficulty of device discovery and reducing the time it takes to print and scan from a mobile device. The ability to send a print job, scan a document or send a fax with a simple tap of a smart phone on an MFP is incredibly convenient. Additionally, it eliminates the need for IT staff to set up guest access to MFPs and printers that may not reside on an accessible WiFi network.”
