Fairfield, NJ – Buyers Laboratory LLC (BLI), the world’s leading independent evaluator of document imaging hardware and software, today announced four Outstanding Achievement in Innovation award recipients in the document imaging software category. With these awards, BLI’s experienced analysts and lab technicians recognize products that stand out for a breakthrough in technology, a unique feature or other noteworthy innovation that moves that class of product forward. Among the dozens of qualified products BLI evaluated, offerings from Digitech Systems, Samsung and Xerox were selected for this honor.
Digitech Systems Adds a Touch of Magic
Many organizations deal with a barrage of paper and electronic forms, such as invoices, on a daily basis. Files need to be identified accurately and key data needs to be extracted so the document can be routed correctly. But even with an advanced capture/workflow program in place, the processing of these documents can be a burden on an organization’s staff. So the developers at Digitech Systems have come up with PaperVision Forms Magic Technology. Forms Magic employs AI techniques to intelligently group like documents together based on a range of parameters and commonalities, including the text itself, the position of the text on the page and more. The engine hones in on key points that distinguish one class of document from the next, so even if a crucial word like “Invoice” is missing or illegible to the OCR engine, the software is still able to discern what the document is.
“Seeing Forms Magic Technology in action, we were instantly impressed. It’s like facial recognition for documents,” said Jamie Bsales, Director, Office Workflow Solutions Analysis at BLI. “This means files at first unfamiliar to the classification engine can be recognized, parsed and slipstreamed into the appropriate document workflow, greatly reducing the number of exceptions that need to be dealt with manually. Simply put, it is unlike any recognition technology BLI has seen to date among leading document workflow solutions.”
Samsung Smart UX and Printing App Center Bring Mobile Sensibilities to the MFP
Thanks to the proliferation of smartphones and tablets, most people are familiar with intelligent touchscreen devices and the concept off enhancing the functionality of those devices with downloadable apps and widgets. Samsung’s Android-based Smart UX Center MFP control panel, in conjunction with the online Printing App Center, brings this same concept to the MFP. Samsung’s unique and truly innovative approach makes it stand out among the growing number of MFP app platforms. On the MFP, the heart of the Smart UX platform is the 10.1-inch Android tablet that functions as the MFP control panel. The panel is extraordinarily easy to use: Just as on a standalone tablet, features and functions are clearly represented by icon tiles that can be tapped to access the sub-menus and settings required to perform a given task. What makes the ecosystem unique, however, is the addition of the Printing App Center. Accessible from the Smart UX panel at the MFP, from a smartphone/tablet, or from a web browser on a PC, this online marketplace offers free and low-cost apps and widgets that enhance and expand the features of the MFP.
“The combination of a true Android tablet UI and accompany ‘app store’ accessible by end users, not just resellers and IT administrators, puts Samsung in the vanguard as MFP makers begin to embrace the app paradigm,” said Bsales. “Customers should have no trouble finding solutions to boost productivity, streamline daily workflows and realize the full potential of their MFPs. Samsung has just scratched the surface of the platform’s possibilities.”
Xerox Adds More Potential to the MFP
With MFPs now acting as the hub for an organization’s document workflows, customers need devices that are more feature-rich and extensible than ever. In that vein, Xerox Corp. has two recent offerings worthy of BLI’s Outstanding Achievement in Innovation honors: the 2016 Xerox ConnectKey Technology platform and the related Xerox Easy Translator Service app.
Since its debut in 2013, Xerox ConnectKey Technology has served as the basis for the company’s interconnected MFPs, combining embedded controller hardware, the Xerox EIP embedded software platform, an open Application Programming Interface (API) for the development of custom MFP apps, and related software and services offerings and services. The latest iteration brings the promise of the platform to full fruition. For example, MFPs equipped with 2016 Xerox ConnectKey Technology include ready-to-use apps to support printing from mobile devices via QR code or email. This functionality is included out of the box—an industry first—and does not require dedicated server software. Another impressive development is the associated Xerox App Gallery, an online portal where customers can select and download MFP-resident “apps” that add functionality, enhance convenience and increase productivity.
“MFPs are growing more intelligent, flexible and customizable with each successive generation. With its 2016 Xerox ConnectKey Technology, Xerox has proven that to be true yet again,” said BLI’s Bsales. “The platform’s combination of onboard intelligence and online extensibility put it a step ahead.”
In an increasingly globalized world, there is considerable need for translation services. But getting printed documents translated can be a hassle. The Xerox Easy Translator Service removes any barriers by allowing users to scan documents at the MFP and receive a printout of the translated document—in any one of 38 languages—within minutes. Users can also opt for a professional-quality translation performed by translation specialists, typically returned within a few business days.
“Imagine walking up to an MFP with a document written in a foreign language, scanning it, and getting a printout of the document that has been translated into your native tongue. Or imagine needing a quick translation of a document for a colleague that speaks a foreign language. That’s the magic the Xerox Easy Translator Service app enables,” explained Bsales.
